David made a special trip to Doncaster and Sheffield to see the Directors based there. They were still in winter storage and he heard later that some were steamed for summer use just a week later.
Peter Kerslake says "62664 Queen Mary had only a year left in service as it was condemned in August 1960. The original eleven members of the GCR Director class had been built between 1919 and 1922. In 1924 the LNER ordered a further 24 of the "Improved Director" class, all for service north of the border in Scotland.
The first of the 35 to be withdrawn were in September 1958 and 62685 "Malcolm Graeme" was the last, in January 1962."
