5195 1958-07-24 Dainton

Down express ascending Dainton Bank, with front-end assistance. View NE, towards Newton Abbot '5101' 2-6-2T No. 5195 (built 10/34) is piloting 4-6-0 No. 6848 'Toddington Grange' (built 10/37) on the 11.10 Swansea - Penzance Summer Saturdays express.

Peter Kerslake says "5195 was allocated to Newton Abbot, one of the heavy tanks used on banking, freight and secondary passenger work
This being a Summer Saturday it is highly likely that Newton Abbot was short of engines for pilot duties over the banks to Plymouth, and although the practice of using a tank engine as a pilot was frowned upon it could be that this was all that was availble that day and with the "Express Passenger" lamps in position it looks as though it is going to assist right through to Plymouth."
