5132 1949-06-05 Exeter St Davids

GWR 51xx class 2-6-2T No 5132 leaves Exeter St.Davids with a local train for Torquay on June 5, 1949.

Peter Kerslake says "5132 makes a stirring picture as she sets off in fine style westwards from here at Exeter St. Davids in 1949 bound for Newton Abbot and the Torquay line.
Originally numbered 3132 within the "3100" class this engine dated back to 1905 before the class were modified and renumbered between 1928 and 1930 into the "5100" series.
This view shows the two struts running down to the front buffer beam which were added in 1909 due to the locomotives' frequent use on banking duties having regularly resulted in buckled front frames.
Versatile and strong engines the class were widely used on banking and piloting duties such as those over the South Devon banks and the Severn Tunnel as well as being at home on secondary passenger duties as seen here."
