4178 1962 Wellington (Salop)

4178 1962 Wellington (Salop)

on Much Wenlock train.

A couple of lads appear to have managed to get themslves on the footplate of a really nicely turned out 1478 here at Wellington , this engine having been a long standing resident at Wellington shed since the mid ' fifties .
The penultimate example of the " 5101 " series , introduced by Mr. Churchward in 1929, this batch of his " Large Prarie " tanks continued into production at Swindon until 1949 when sister engine 4179 became the last of that particular series to come into service.
Allocated thoughout the Western Region to a wide ranging spread of Motive Power Depots these fine engines were ideally suited for secondary but fast passenger duties as seen here in adddition to working freights and performing banking duties such as those at Dainton , Hemerdon and at Sapperton .
