5164 1958-07-24 Totnes

View NE, towards Newton Abbot, Exeter etc. '5101' 2-6-2T No. 5164 (built 11/30, withdrawn 4/63, now preserved on the Severn Valley Railway) is waiting in the centre road for the next Down train requiring banking up Rattery Bank.

Peter Kerslake says "A class developed from the original "3100" class, the "5101" series of 2-6-2 heavy tank engines emerged from Swindon Works from 1929, with 5164 seen here being constructed in November of 1930, the class seeing service over a wide area of the G.W.R. and engaged on suburban passenger duties, freight workings and banking duties until the first withdrawal came in 1956 when 5159 was condemned.
With the last of the class surviving until 1965 six were preserved with 5164 engaged here on banking duties at Totnes being restored at the Severn Valley Railway following her withdrawal from her then home at Pontypool Road depot in April of 1963 where she had been later allocated following her time in Devon.
5164 was allocated to Newton Abbot from the mid 'fifties following service at Wellington and Tyseley, and whilst in Devon would have been used on local passenger rosters from Newton Abbot to Exeter and Kingswear as well as freight workings and banking freights over Dainton and Rattery banks with Totnes lying between both those formidable inclines."
