5195 1950s Dawlish
A panoramic view of 5195 on a Down local
Taken from the high ground above Kennaway Tunnel this view shows the exact location of the devastating damage caused by the 2014 storms and wild sea at this , the approach to Dawlish station from the West , where the track was left suspended in the air with nothing left beneath it .
A number of large containers , filled with rock , were very soon placed on the beach seen here in order to afford some protection from the sea to the massive work force called in to the area from far and wide , and work continues to this day on sections of the walkway where damage is still being made good, so the job is not finished yet !
This is where the track was breached completely for a number of weeks with the roadway and houses further up the line to the right of this picture badly damaged and the Westcountry cut off from the rest of the rail network.
