W21W 1960-04-23 West Drayton
GWR diesel railcar No W21W at West Drayton on April 23, 1960.
Peter Kerslake says "This must be a "late in life" view of railcar number 21 from April of 1960 as the examples still in service at that date were nearing the end of their working lives, the last two being condemned in September of 1960 and May of 1962 from Bristol St. Philip's Marsh depot.
Built in 1940 with body work from Swindon's own Works, W21W still looks well cared for in this view at West Drayton the railcar probably still allocated to Southall where in the mid 'fifties she was one of five there although photographic evidence shows that later in June 1962 this railcar was working in and around the Monmouth and Chepstow areas.
The Swindon bodied examples were distinguished from the earlier versions with bodywork from Park Royal and the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company by their wedge shaped ends, rather than the more attractive rounded design of those earlier varients."
