GWR DRC 19 1944-04-25 North Wylam

GWR diesel railcar No 19 stands at North Wylam on April 25, 1944 whilst on loan to the LNER during WW II.

Peter Kerslake says "The G.W.R. 's Railcar number 19 seen here was the second of the third and final series to have bodywork built at their Swindon Works in 1937 and following Mr. Collett's three years of experience with the initial two earlier designs bodied by Park Royal and the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company .
Loaned by the G.W.R. during the war year of 1944 to the L.N.E.R. Railcar number 19 may possibly have been accompanied on such workings in and around the Newcastle area by two of her sister Railcars , but the reason for , or the length of such transfer so far north is not clear.

More research shows me that Wylam is situated to the west of Newcastle upon Tyne in Northumberland and on the main line between that major city and Carlisle .
There is a suggestion that Railcar 19 was accompanied by sister units 6 and 11 on loan by the G.W.R. to the L.N.E.R. in the wartime year of 1944 , but why , and for how long , I wonder ? "
