WxW 1951-09-07 Lambourn
One of the later GWR diesel railcars stands at Lambourn after arrival from Newbury on September 7, 1951.
Peter Kerslake says "This is one of the final series of twenty one railcars which were bodied by Swindon Works from the first, numbered 18 in 1937 until the last which was number 38 and was completed in 1942 when wartime activities prevented any further construction from Swindon.
This "Head On" view clearly shows the wedge shaped front end which distinguished the Swindon built examples from the earlier Park Royal and Gloucester built varients, the Swindon ones also having the more conventional design of buffers.
The railcars lasted in service until late 1962 and saw service from a wide range of Motive Power Depots, ranging in 1956 from Carmarthen in West Wales to Worcester and Stourbridge in the north and to Weymouth in the south, there being thirty five still operational that year , dispersed over thirteen Depots."
