W15W 1950s Kennington Junction, Oxford

W15W 1950s Kennington Junction, Oxford

Kennington Junction, Oxford, heading towards Princes Risborough. I think this is Crimson and Cream livery but I am open to correction! Completed and delivered into service with the G.W.R. in April of 1936 this example of the Great Western's railcars had seen service in its earlier days from Bristol St . Philip's Marsh depot in company with her sisters numbered W8 and W10 , the former being a spare unit for W10 and W15. One duty upon which the railcars were rostered in their early days at Bristol was the regular service between Temple Meads and Cardiff and Newport , a passage through the Severn Tunnel being necessary , doubtless proving to have been quite an experience for the onboard passengers ! W15 had a seating capacity of 69 with a luggage space behind the double doors seen here at the trailing end in this view. Removal of the valancing which had covered the bogies was undertaken during the very early years in order to improve access for maintenance purposes.
