This is a strange pairing of two of the Bristol St. Philip's Marsh allocated former G.W.R. Railcars coupled together at Temple Meads providing an unusual sight , and they may possibly be working on either the Portishead line or the Avonmouth and Severn Beach line , these Railcars being used on such services used at this period in time. There were a total of five such Railcars at Bristol's 82B depot in late January of 1956 , and this combination of two units would have produced an immense total of 420 h.p. , each car having twin A.E.C. built power units and each having a seating capacity of 48 passengers . From a total of 35 Railcars in early 1956 there were 30 remaining in service by late 1957 and early 1958 , with W22W , withdrawn in 1962 being saved for preservation and now at Didcot . Allocated to Bristol St . Philips Marsh Depot , the two former GWR railcars shown here in this interesting view , namely W23W and her sister W25W were two of five units which my 1956 shedbook shows to have been there , with 1956 being the year of this view . Following the first arrival of the railcars to the Bristol area in 1940 St . Philips Marsh rostered their allocation to a number of duties with local runs to Portishead , Weston super Mare and Bath being interposed with longer runs down to Cardiff and Newport as well . A ' regular ' duty for the class were the runs down through Avonmouth to Severn Beach , and when the line from Severn Beach through to Pilning was still operational a couple of what became as ' Rounder ' duties took them on a circular route back to Temple Meads via Patchway , rather than working back again through Avonmouth . W25W had the honour of being the last of her class to be at Bristol , being withdrawn in August of 1962
