50865 1950s Heaton Lodge
Cyril Towell says: Heaton Lodge Junction near Mirfield West Yorkshire. Personal knowledge of this junction and I offer the suggestion that the train depicted is a Normanton to Sowerby Bridge passenger service. Definitely a slow passenger train and not a express service. The head lamp indicates a stopping train i.e. one that stops at intermediate stations between Normanton and Sowerby Bridge. That headlamp placed under the chimney was also used to indicate the following, Breakdown Crane not proceeding to clear the line. The signalmen involved en-route would use a 3 pause 1 beat on their block instruments between signal boxes for the actual track used. I.E. Fast line, Slow line, Passenger Loop. Those semaphore signals were in the Up direction. The smoke hidden signal in the off position read Up Slow towards Brighouse. Centre signal with distant underneath read Up Slow towards Huddersfield via Fast Line. The lowest signals on gantry Up Slow to Huddersfield via Slow Line. Excuse errors if any 40 years have passed since personal days at Mirfield.
