The station has been stripped of signage, with the exception of the signal box name - now a valuable collectors item. A sad picture of the former Western Region station at Tavistock looking towards the terminus of the branch at Launceston , the line having closed to passenger services from the 31st . December of 1962 whilst freight services lingered on for two years more. Tavistock South , as the Western Region station was known , for the Southern Region also had their own line and station at Tavistock , displays its fine overall roof in this view and the signal box appears intact with no sign of broken windows . Opened in 1859 the line from Marsh Mills and Tavistock Junction to the east of Plymouth , running through to here at Tavistock did not give up its life quietly as the weekend of the closure saw the worst blizzards to hit the South West since 1947 , resulting in the footplate crew and three passengers on the 7: 10 p.m. to Plymouth from here at Tavistock spending the night in Bickleigh signalbox with massive snowfalls blocking the line. Even in 1967 , three years after the last freight workings came through here at Tavistock South , much still remains intact with the large signal box which had replaed two earlier boxes looking free from damage and the water column still in place at this , the Plymouth side of the station . This overall roofed station had been in place from 1887 following a fire which destroyed the original . In 1962 , its last year of passenger services , Tavistock South would have been served by five through daily workings from Plymouth running all the way to Launceston , with an additional five services terminating here from Plymouth
