Ilfracombe station was situated high above the town as photographed from the top of Torrs Walk on 15th June 1956. It was built up on extensive earthworks and was 225 feet above sea level, necessitating a long walk down a steep slope into the town. The engine shed is at the right hand side and the station is in the centre with several rakes of coaches stored in the carriage sidings in front.
