A peaceful evening scene in the late 1950s shows a very quiet but smart Copmanthorpe Station, 4 miles to the SW of York. This panorama illustrates only too clearly the lack of traffic that would cause its demise to passengers in January 1959 and to all traffic in May 1964. It had been opened by the NER on this site in 1905 replacing an earlier York & North Midland Railway station of 1839. Noteworthy, is the over-enthusiastically shunted and derailed wooden-bodied hopper wagon that no-one seems to have bothered to rectify! A distant freight is seen plodding southbound.
