61037 1963-09-28 Byers Green

Ex-LNER Thompson 'B1' class 4-6-0 No. 61037 'Jairou'. Built at Darlington in November 1947 as LNER No. 1037 and withdrawn in May 1964.
I suspect very few of these participants at Byers Green in Co. Durham on this September 1963 joint RCTS/SLS 'North Eastern Tour' knew what a 'Jairou' is or was! 61037 had headed the Bishop Auckland to Stanhope leg of the tour, but seems to have halted amongst the undergrowth on a rather parlous looking section of track! A 'Jairou' is an Asian species of Gazelle (Gazella Bennetti) a.k.a. 'Chinkara'. It inhabits India, Pakistan and Iran. But of course - you already knew all this!
