12002 1950-03-26 Derby

Former LMS diesel shunter No.12002 at Derby on 26th March 1950 was the precursor of all the standard British Railways 08 shunters with its English Electric 6K engine developing 300bhp, later uprated to 350bhp. It was built as a demonstration locomotive by Hawthorn Leslie in 1934 at its factory at Forth Bank, Newcastle with engines, generators, traction motors and other electrical equipment installed at the Dick, Kerr Works of English Electric in Preston. It was purchased by the LMS in 1936 and numbered 7079, becoming BR No.12002 in September 1949 and lasted until June 1956. The shunter was based at Crewe South throughout its LMS and British Railways working life.
