The first railtour to be organised by the Railway Correspondance and Travel Society (catchy name huh?) ran on Sunday 11th September 1938 from London King's Cross to Peterborough and return. Very appropriately titled 'The Old Flying Scotsman' the LNER had Patrick Stirling's iconic GNR 'Single' No. 1 booked for this historic occasion. Nineteen days earlier, the LNER had run its own railtour with newly restored to steam No.1. On that occasion, running from King's Cross to Cambridge and return. No. 1 was built at Doncaster in April 1870 and withdrawn for preservation in Sept. 1907.
