8109 1957-06 Wood End Tunnel

8109 1957-06 Wood End Tunnel

‘81xx’ 2-6-2T No.8109 from Leamington shed, leaving Wood End Tunnel heading towards the station and then Birmingham in June 1957. It moved to Tyseley in November 1960 and was withdrawn from there in June 1965, the last survivor of the class of ten. This view of the tunnel from the footpath on the embankment to the up platform shows the sharp curve of the tunnel bore. It is strange that the GWR did not continue the cutting for the short distance as this would have been a cheaper option than a tunnel.
