8108 1957-06 Henley-in-Arden

‘81xx’ 2-6-2T No. 8108 at Henley in Arden in June 1957. The ten ‘81xx’ 2-6-2Ts were rebuilt using the frames from withdrawn ‘51xx’ engines in 1938/9. It had been intended to complete fifty but the remainder were suspended when war broke out. They had new front ends and boilers and 5ft 6ins coupled wheels to improve acceleration on suburban passenger work. No.8108 which was rebuilt from No.5133 in September 1939, was shedded at Tyseley and it had only six more months in service when this picture was taken on 15th May 1960. This view of the Birmingham end of the Down platform shows the porter's summer house in the background. The overhead wire suspended between the lampposts on the Down platform is linked to the signal box which is to the left off camera.
