A pair of B12/3 4-6-0s Nos 8555 and 8509 arrives at Westerfield with a down slow in 1937. Note the continued use of ex GER six wheeled coaches at this late date.
Peter Kerslake says "With two B12s on a lightly loaded passenger duty, I wonder whether the train engine 8509 is in trouble as there seems to be steam being lost from the cylinders. 8509 was one of the early members of the class built between 1910 and 1921 and then designated as S69s by the Great Eastern Railway with 51 coming from their Stratford Works followed by a further 20 built by the Beardmore Company, the odd number due to a repalcement having to be built for 1506 which was condemned following an accident at Colchester in July 1912, not long after entering service."
