26026 1953-06 Silkstone No. 2 Tunnel East Portal
LNER designed 'EM1' class Bo-Bo Electric No. 26026. Built at Gorton In January 1952 and withdrawn in July 1981 as TOPS No. 76026.
The famous 'Worsborough Incline' near Barnsley ran between Wentworth Junction and West Silkstone Junction. It was about 3.5 miles long with a ruling grade of 1 in 40, the pair of Silkstone tunnels at the summit were notoriously bad for air quality in steam days. In June 1953, the driver of 26026 will encounter no such problems in his enclosed cab.
