The prototype Metropolitan-Vickers Gas Turbine-Electric No. 18100 was just one of several attempts to find viable alternatives to steam haulage on Britain's railways. Built in March 1952 it survived until April 1968, latterly converted to an all electric locomotive for crew training as BR No. E1000 (E2001 from 1959). It is at Bristol Temple Meads in the 1950s having been relieved from the Paddington-Penzance 'Merchant Venturer'. The locomotive is reversing over to Bath Road depot and was rostered to return to Paddington at 4.15pm with the Up 'Bristolian'.
