Leeds Express leaving King's Cross
View SW from the York Road platform, used by trains down the tunnels to Moorgate and to South London, this being the ex-GN terminus of the East Coast Main Line (ECML). Just after Nationalisation, the first of the new Thompson Pacifics, No. 113 'Great Northern' rebuilt from Gresley's first 4-6-2, makes a smoky rush for the Gas Works Tunnel out of Platform 5 with the 13.10 express to Leeds and Bradford. It is passing the big King's Cross Signalbox under the prominent signal-bridge leading to it. Further over is the King's Cross Suburban station and dimly behind is the great arch of St Pancras Station.
