Machynlleth shedded 5507 was one of the later 4575 versions dating from 1927 of the original 45XX class and had larger capacity water tanks, something which had restricted the earlier members of the class on the Cambrian to working short distance freights and passenger duties.
Afon Wen was an isolated location at sea level and prone to exposure to the elements in the Winter months. It was the junction for the London Midland Region line between the Cambrian system and Caernarvon to the north and so was an important point of change for holidaymakers visiting Pwllheli from tne northern cities.
