Peter Kerslake says "It's not easy to determine which way this working is heading here at Tallerddig , just to the west of Welshpool on the main Cambrian line to Shewsbury , but I suspect it's heading eastwards towards Welshpool on an " up " working so the double header will face a three mile long one in fifty two climb to the summit , some seven hundred feet above sea level , and both locomotives look to be working hard with a fair load in tow .
The climb westwards was easier at one in one hundred and thirteen grade , the area being renowned for its 120 feet deep cutting at the summit , the deepest cutting then on record.
4560 had been built in 1924 and spent a number of years allocated to 89c which was Machynlleth , from where she was withdrawn at or about the date of this view , so her days may well have been limited when this picture was taken , whilst 75020 was at Oswestry, the Standards having come on to the Cambrian network in its last years of steam operations"
