4549 1961-05-29 Perranwell
A fine portrait of 4549 here at Perranwell , on the branch betwen Truro and Falmouth in West Cornwall , the engine bearing a G.W.R. style painted number on her front buffer beam and minus her smokebox door plate , with my old shedbook showing that in the mid ' fifties she had been allocated to 89c ., which was Machynlleth in South Wales , a long way fom here in Cornwall .
The straight topped 1000 gallon capacity water tank on this side is clear to see , later versions having a sloped topped tank capable of holding an extra 300 gallons , .
Constructed in six separate batches from 1906 until 1929 these delightful little engines could be found over a wide area of Western Region territory ranging from Cornwall as shown here to Bristol , in South Wales and as far north as Wolverhampton with a few even working empty stock between Paddington and Old Oak Common in their later years.
