During their final years in service a number of Churchward's little " 4500 " class were enhanced by the receipt of fully lined out B.R. livery , and 5531 looks resplendent here in that livery .
A Plymouth Laira engine in earlier years 5531 appears to have seen out her last years in service at Southall , from where , in company with the three others remaining in service , she was condemned in 1964 .
This view shows the sliding shutters to the cabsides , providing additional weather protection for the footplatemen together with the sloping water tank top with its increased 1300 galllon capacity , 300 gallons more than the original straight topped design.
5531 had been constructed at Swindon in 1929 , one of the final and sixth batch of " Forty Fivers " , a design going back to its origins in 1906 and an enlarged version of Churchward's earlier " 4400 " class
