LMS designed Stanier 'Caprotti Black 5' class 4-6-0 No. 44686. Built at Horwich in April 1951 and withdrawn in October. 1965.
Fitted with a double chimney and revised Caprotti valve gear, 44686 is seen at Chelford in Cheshire in 1959. One of the final two 'Black 5s' to be built, it cost £20,642, some £5000 more than a standard Black 5 version! The unlovely signs of impending electrification at Chelford are all too evident with the caterary masts already in place.
