44699 1965-07 Stranraer

44699 1965-07 Stranraer

44699 in July 1965 was a veritable engine pickers delight. Its depot is denoted by both a cast shedplate and DUMFRIES, painted by Cowlairs Works, on the bufferbeam in LNER style; it had been transferred there from Corkerhill In May 1964 and would return there in May 1966 for its last year in service. It has tablet exchange apparatus, a souvenir from its days at Perth. Most unusually for a Scottish Region engine it has both AWS and a Smith-Stone speedometer; the fitting dates are unrecorded for both as is that for the central top feed boiler. The upper lamp bracket has been moved half-way down the smokebox door and the edges of the smokebox number plate have been painted in white. 44699 is paired with it second welded tender but would soon receive a part-welded tender, although it would exchange this for another welded and then a riveted tender before ending its days back with a part-welded tender.
