I thought the line from Caernavon was solely powered by tank locos until I saw this. W.G. Rear & M. F Williams in their Book "The Cambrian Coast Railway write "Normal motive power for most of the workings along this route were permutations of tank and tender engines. Largest engines were class 5 4-6-0s. Normal motive power in BR days were the 2-6-2T engine of 'Fowler', 'Stanier', 'Fairburn' and BR Standard designs."

Richard Greaves has tracked down the working of this train which is recorded in the OPC Book 'From Chester to Holyhead - The Branch Lines' by Bill Rear;
The Reporting No. 1K03 carried by 45198 is the 8.45am Penychain to Stoke return Butlins Holiday Camp train. Black Fives where only introduced on the branch in 1964.

Afon Wen , on the Cambrian line between Pwllheli and Portmadoc , was the important junction with the former L.M.S. line running southwards from Bangor and Caernarvon and which provided a through service from the Midlands and North Wales to the resorts at Pwllheli and Aberystwyth with regular and heavily loaded passenger services for holidymakers from the north , as well as being an important freight line .
The station and its yards at Afon Wen had dated back to the days of the Cambrian Railways , its situation at sea level making it especially exposed to the elements during times of bad weather , particularly on its seaward side .
Today all traces of this once important junction have gone with the passage of time, as has the line which once ran from Afon Wen northwards linking North Wales with the Cambrian system and its many attractions .
