Local engine No.44771 on 4th January 1962 has ‘4771’ painted on the edge of the running plate above the front step, probably from a recent works visit. It displays all the characteristic features of a late pattern Stanier ‘Class 5’ with forward top feed boiler, part-welded tender, AWS and external pipework to the steam lance cock on the smokebox side. On the adjacent track is one of the final two Caprotti valve gear ‘Class 5s’, either No.44686 or No.44687.
