44731 1948c Farnley Junction
Colin Ryder says44731 of Blackpool Central (24E/28A) shed in very early BR Mixed Traffic livery when the letters were hand-painted on the tender leaving a gap in the centre for the transfer of the new lion-and-wheel emblem to be applied. When the transfers became available it was decided to use just the logo and dispense with the lettering. The letters on the tender are 8 high, whereas some other Stanier tenders had 10 high letters, for example 44825 and 44999 seen elsewhere on this website. Even more interesting, because of the rarity value, is the snapshot of the cab-side of Jubilee 45708Resolution of 25G Farnley Junction shed sporting the short-lived BR 1948 BLOCK style of numerals used by Crewe and Horwich works in 1948. Why rare? Because R.Townsin's book on Jubilees, published by the RCTS in 2012, and that by Essery & Toms (Wild Swan Publ., 1994) have no record of this style of numeral being used on this loco. But here is the proof! Tomsin records 45708 as having cab-side numerals in 8Gill Sans by the end of August 1948. Hawkins (Book of the Jubilees, Irwell Press, 2002, p.162) notes 45708 having overhauls as HS: w/e 26/8/48; LI: w/e 14/10/49; HG: w/e 8/3/51, and receiving its BR number w/e 28/8/48. So this photo is more likely to be 1948c than 1950c. I think it will certainly pre-date the LI overhaul in October 1949 Now confirmed as at home at Farnley Junction shed by the buildings in the left background
