44757 1950s Derby

44757 1950s Derby

Holbeck Caprotti 'Black Five' blows off from its safety valves as it prepares to depart northwards from Platform 1 in late 1959/early 1960. It went to the Leeds shed from new in January 1949 and stayed there until 1963. The bulbous steam pipes on the second ten Caprottis fitted with Timken roller bearings, including No.44757, were cranked to clear the drive-gear on the top of the cannon boxes at the top of the cylinders, those on the first ten engines being straight. No.44757 has AWS with the pick-up protection plate under the front bufferbeam and the cylindrical timing reservoir on the footplate alongside the firebox.

Chris Burton asks"Did 44757 ever return to Crewe for a full overhaul? I ask as it reached Cambridge in the early 60s looking pretty close to ex-works condition, not as in your photograph. It is reputed to have been seen outside Crewe Paintshop in November 1961. Is this verifiable? "
