The interesting history of Sir William Stanier's 'Black 5s' culminated in a series of 'experimental' or 'modified' versions, largely at the instigation of George Ivatt under both LMS and BR regimes. It is debateable as to what (if any) improvements or advantages were gleaned because the 'standard' versions were already excellent in any case! 44740 is fitted with Caprotti valve gear and a modified running plate. It was in the yard at Llandudno Junction MPD in April 1956.
