44775 1964c Sutton Park
A Saltley ‘Class 5’ No.44775 is backing across the Up line into the goods loop, possibly with the daily parcels train for the large Post Office sorting depot, which was built in the Second World War as a Forces Post Office alongside the yard, and which is still used by the Royal Mail today, albeit it is no longer rail connected. Note the broken station window with a newspaper stuffed in to stop the draught. This picture was taken after No.44775 had completed a General overhaul at Cowlairs Works in February 1964, as evidenced by the large 10” cab numbers and SALTLEY (BIRMINGHAM) on the bufferbeam, LNER style. It was built with a forward top feed boiler but Cowlairs had swapped this for a central top feed boiler, although it has kept its Self Cleaning apparatus according to the SC plate on the smokebox door. No.44775 was transferred to Mold Junction in June 1965 and withdrawn in late 1967.
