44749 1959c Birmingham New Street

Built as No.M4749 in February 1948, this was the second Stanier Class ‘5’ fitted with the Caprotti valve gear which caused such a radical change in appearance compared to the standard Walschaerts valve gear engines. The running plate had to be set over a foot lower to clear the camboxes and reversing gearboxes, resulting in the cut-off cab sides and the outside steam pipes, cranked to clear the drive-gear on the top of the cannon boxes at the top of the cylinders, were very prominent. No.44749 was allocated to Longsight shed from new until September 1960 when it was transferred to Speke Junction; this picture was taken before it was fitted with AWS in September 1959. As was often the case, the tank filler on its part-welded tender has been left open. The first vehicle behind the tender is an ex LNWR six wheeled combination truck, probably in use moving spares between works and running sheds.
