44766 1960s Leicester Midland

One of only two standard Stanier Class Fives to be fitted with a double chimney, No.44766 from Bescot backing into Leicester’s wartime designed round house. It originally had electric lighting but this was removed in 1954; its AWS was installed in February 1959. Note in the background the tall ‘Engine Shed Sidings’ signal box that controlled a small eleven road marshalling sidings up to its closure on 29th December 1968.

Ed Purcell says "This loco was 'Pride of Bescot' for a few years and was kept pretty clean for excursion and special work. In between it worked fast fitteds and was said to be an excellent loco. It pulled a train from New Street to Wembley in April 1963 for the schoolboys' international game which I found nowhere near as exciting as the trip behind this popular loco."
