All the clutter characteristic of a steam running shed on 17th February 1963, in this case the No2 shed. Armstrong Whitworth built-'Black Five' No.45223 has a 'Not to be Moved' sign and the usual oilcan on its front footplate; it was a visitor from Leicester Great Central shed and would move to Cricklewood the following month. Fairburn 2-6-4T No.42174 was also from Leicester, but from the Midland shed. It was built by British Railways at Derby in October 1948 and would also move away from Leicester in March, to Bedford. The shed is a surprising survivor now being protected by a 'Grade 2' listing and unlike the well known Barrow Hill this building retains its original roof as it was never modernised by BR, understandably the turntable pit has been filled. For years it was rented from the BRB as a store by local firm 'Whitworths Foods' who imported, blended and packed fruit, I remember visiting one day in the 1990s when a container of Dates had been unloaded and were being fumigated under a large tarpaulin as they were suspected of harbouring large poisionous spiders!
