The large building on the extreme left of the photo is the enginemen's hostel, which was used until the late 1950s. Crews on the frequent coal trains from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire to London regularly changed at Wellingborough, then returned home. For late duties, enginemen would stay overnight in the hostel.
