45190 1966-05-07 Marylebone
LMS 5MT 45190 leaves Marylebone with the 16.38 to Nottingham Victoria on 7 May 1966. Note that the carriages carry carriage boards, surprising for that route at that date. In the distance the DMU depot is packed with empty vehicles ready to work off shed, their engines were left running all day long in the 1970s when I visited and it was a very poorly ventilated old carriage shed resulting in stifling fumes!. The signal is interesting as it is a standard GWR/BR(W) tubular post design complete with their finials but is fitted with BR(E) upper quadrant arms, perhaps a nod towards the joint nature of some of the route?
Robert Waterman comments "These semi-fast services carriage roof/cantrail destination boards displayed 'London Nottingham' at this time.
Prior to January 1960 when the previous Eastern Region/LNER expresses to Sheffield and Manchester still ran, from photographic evidence that I have seen, Sheffield - Marylebone and such was displayed. Unusual in that the London destination was not diplayed first. I presume this was because the GCR did not consider itself to be a London centric railway. Also the ER, WR and SR Central and South Western divisions used the actual name of their London stations rather than just 'London' as did the LMR."
