45xxx 1950s Tebay

The Black 5 has just passed Scout Green signal box and crossing on the descent of Shap Incline.

The signal box with its down home signal in the 'on' position can just be seen to the left of the back of the train. Above the second coach can be seen the ex-LNWR lower quadrant upper repeater of the up home signal protecting the crossing still in the 'off' position.

The loco still has nearly three miles of downhill running before reaching Tebay.

The train reporting number needs some special explanation. On the Western Division of the LMR, the up trains' reporting number was usually an even number, with the odd numbers being given to down trains. Can anyone help? Was this a special or a relief working?
