44765 1964-07-25 Bristol Barrow Road
44765 is seen on the approach to Temple Meads and the loco number and date confirm that she is working the 7.43am Nottingham to Plymouth train loaded to 10 bogies and is seen passing Barrow Road Depot with a mix of both Midland and Western region engines in attendance.
It's 1964 and one of the surviving 'Castles' is on shed as both Bristol's Bath Road and St. Philip's Marsh Motive Power Depots had by now closed to steam so Western Region locomotives working down to Bristol were now required to be coaled, watered and prepared here at Barrow Road before it too closed the following year .
The Summer Services of 1964 had seen the majority of the last surviving 'Castles' at Wolverhampton's Oxley Depot rostered to Saturday workings down to Temple Meads, to work back home again later the same day following a stop over at Barrow Road , but the shed was certainly run down at that time , and servicing facilities for such visiting engines were basic indeed.
Thanks to Richard Greaves for providing the train information and Peter Kerslaw for the observation on shed.
