45042 1964 Bristol Barrow Road
With 82001. The boiler cladding is a bit of a mess,A very fine overhead view of 45042 on the former Midland Region Barrow Road shed at Bristol, dated from 1964 and showing the general scene of neglect which sadly reflected those unhappy days. The view doubtless dates from after the closure of the former nearby Western Region Motive Power Depot at St. Philip's Marsh which took place that same year, as there's what looks like a Western Region Hall or Castle alongside, without her cabside numberplate, although some stalwart has attempted to clean part of the cabside with even the lining now appearing from beneath the grime! Bristol's principal Western Region Depot at Bath Road had closed to steam much earlier in 1960, its remaining allocation of engines then moving to St. Philip's Marsh and later in 1964 to here at Barrow Road, but Barrow Road itself only survived to the following year, 1965 . In its fiinal year or so Barrow Road provided basic coal and watering facilities for the steam locomotives working as far down into Temple Meads from the West Midlands on Summer Saturday additional passenger workings, before those locomotives were worked back from Temple Meads to Wolverhampton and Birmingham on northbound workings originating from the Westcountry later in the afternoons.
