Justifying the reason for the class nickname, 44985 in totally plain black at Crewe in October 1949 after a Heavy General repair. It has an AWS cylinder on the footplate which was similar in both shape and position to the BR equivalent but this one was for the Hudd system used from 1947 on the ex-LTSR line. 44985 was allocated to Kentish Town from January 1947 until November 1960 and was one of the run-down engines in the 1954 tests
