The old York Queen Street sheds were used for servicing by 'visiting' locomotives in pre-grouping and LNER days. Thereafter, a stand-by engine was stabled outside, ready to spring to the aid of a failed locomotive. In this August 1963 view the locomotive on the alert is BR Peppercorn 'A1' 4-6-2 No. 60140 'Balmoral'. An ex-NER Raven 'B16/3' 4-6-0 No. 61472 can be glimpsed behind. 60140 was built at Darlington in Dec. 1948 and withdrawn in Jan. 1965.
