An unusual and unexpected visitor, Eastern Region ‘A1’ Pacific No.60145 St Mungo, attracts a crowd to Moor Street on a murky Sunday 5th September 1965.The Warwickshire Railway Society ‘Pennine Railtour on the previous day had been booked for Gresley ‘A4’ No.60034 but this developed a hot box whilst running in from Darlington Works. Another ‘A4’ No.60004, also newly ex-works, was substituted but it too ran hot and so No.60145, which was at Leeds Neville Hill, was rushed down to Saltley in the early hours of 4th September to work the special. This train departed from Birmingham New Street and travelled via Derby and Sheffield to Leeds where St Mungo handed over to No.4472 Flying Scotsman which took the train on to Carlisle via the West Coast mainline. The same engines covered the return journey, No.4472 using the Settle & Carlisle route back to Leeds. The next day, 5th September, No.60145 worked another Warwickshire Railway Society Railtour (1X82) which it was originally scheduled to work to Weymouth, but it was taken off at Banbury and replaced by No.7029 Clun Castle. No.60145 worked the special back from Banbury to Birmingham Snow Hill. The engine travelled to Saltley for servicing and was returned home the following day.

Ed Purcell adds "LNER Pacifics were almost unheard of in the Birmingham area, 60077 did work the Sutton Coldfield to Stirling sleeper car service once but, yes they were like rocking horse droppings!"
