60116 1956-04-28 York MPD

A fine and incredibly sharp portrait of 'Hal O' The Wynd' taken at York MPD in April 1956. Of all the many characters culled from Sir Walter Scott's 'Waverley' novels I think BR Peppercorn 'A1' 4-6-2 No. 60116's name is amongst the most memorable. It is an alternative name for Henry Gow featured in “The Fair Maid of Perth.” He was a blacksmith in Perth who was “known to Highland and Lowland as the best armourer that ever made sword and the truest soldier that ever drew one.” So now you all know! 60116 was built at Doncaster in Oct. 1948 and was withdrawn in June 1965.
