This is Bridge Street crossing just north of the straight line three track shed building with the houses in the 'Old Town' seen across the line in the background. The date was a Sunday and there were some expresses scheduled to take the 'Coast Route' from Newcastle around this time so it is unlikely to be an ECML diversion. Sir Walter Scott was a Gateshead engine at the time.
