Sandwiched between unidentified 'V2' and 'WD' classes is BR Peppercorn 'A1' 4-6-2 No. 60120 'Kittiwake', photographed in the 1960s at York MPD's yard. The wet ash pits in the foreground are seen to good advantage, a relatively satisfactory solution to the dreadful problems of disposing loco ash and char. Simply tip the offending materials into the water and remove the resultant sludge periodically. 60120 was built at Doncaster in Dec. 1948 and withdrawn in Jan. 1964.
